The Big Journey Is Coming to an End

April is in full bloom, and I know it sounds like a cliché, but time really does fly. It feels like just yesterday I received my acceptance notification from Loyola Law School. I remember that day so clearly—the rush of excitement, followed by all the arrangements: booking flights, organizing logistics, and getting everything in place. I’m sure many of us experienced something similar.

Now, this chapter is reaching its climax. Finals are just around the corner, and preparations for graduation are nearly complete. My cap and gown are already reserved, and there’s a strong feeling of achievement in the air.

As I write this, I’m sitting outside the library at a table facing the Darling Pavilion. The weather is perfect. The DTLA skyline stretches out in front of me while I get ready for my final class of the week and take a moment to reflect on everything that’s brought me here.

I’ve shared my perspective throughout this experience, but now I’d like to open the space to hear from my esteemed colleagues—fellow Loyola Lions—whom I’ve had the pleasure of meeting along the way. Their insights and stories have always been interesting and thought-provoking, and as we approach the end of our LL.M. program, I’d love for them to share the highlights of their journeys and the key lessons they’ll carry forward as we conclude this chapter together.

“Completing my LL.M. at Loyola Law School has been one of the most rewarding and transformative experiences of my legal career. The program taught me advanced U.S. legal system knowledge and the critical tools to adapt, thrive, and serve others in a complex legal landscape. Educating myself alongside international attorneys—each bringing unique backgrounds and career paths—enriched my understanding of global legal practice involving multicultural perspectives. Loyola empowered me to grow personally and professionally, making me realize that my capabilities can transcend borders. I am honored to be part of a community that champions excellence, innovation, and a deep commitment to justice.”

España Martinez, Mexico.

“I’ve found that my LL.M. experience at LLS is already transforming how I will continue to support international entrepreneurs and creative clients in the vibrant entertainment landscape of Los Angeles. The program has deepened my understanding of corporate structures, regulatory compliance, and transactional drafting—enhancing my ability to guide global clients as they establish and grow their presence in the U.S.”

Douglas Merlini, Brazil

“The most valuable outcome of my LL.M. experience has been the people I’ve met and the connections I’ve built. From classmates with incredibly diverse backgrounds to professors who are leaders in their legal fields, I’ve found mentors who’ve truly inspired me to dream bigger. Seeing their accomplishments made me believe that with the right preparation and effort, I can get there too. Loyola feels like a web of opportunity, once you step in, you become part of something greater.”

Kristels Zamora, Venezuela

“The most significant takeaway from my LL.M. experience in the U.S., with a focus on business law, was the opportunity to integrate my knowledge of French-German law with American law. Although these legal systems are very different, their combination enables a comprehensive understanding of international business law.”

Mykyta Litovchenko, France-Germany

“The most valuable outcome that I take away from my LL.M. experience is the people who I met here – charismatic leaders, top-level professionals, passionate scholars, good friends and reliable business partners with multicultural personal and professional backgrounds. I enjoyed every minute being among these people during my studies and I hope that our professional paths will cross many more times in the future.”

Daria Kurtikova, Russia

“It is really hard to name what is the biggest takeaway from my LL.M, as this chapter of my life I have named “the discovery”. As a foreign licensed attorney it was important for me to take as much as I can from this LL.M program as I plan to continue my profession in LA. I took this program as I wanted to get more specialized in the IP & Entertainment field and as you know Loyola is one of the best places to take that knowledge and enter into the market with confidence. And of course, I would never imagine that even at this stage of my life I could acquire friends that would be like sisters to me. This program let me feel not only experience that I will use in my future career, but also warmness that filled my heart.”

Liana Manusajyan, Armenia

Collaboration has been a key theme throughout this journey—after all, together, we can go farther. This shared value inspired me to co-write part of this article with Liana, whose thoughts will add to the conversation.

Liana: As Julio said, it is hard to believe that we came already to the end – one more week and we will officially become Loyola graduates. I want to go back and remember the moment when each of us took that important decision to start something new and perhaps even scary by taking a risk and applying for the LL.M program. Don’t know about you, but it took me 3 months to make the final decision. I remember when last April I got an acceptance letter from Loyola I had 2 types of contradictory feelings. On one hand, I was so happy and excited that I, a girl from a small city, got a chance to come to the big city, the city of my profession – as I was/am an IP & Entertainment lawyer, and gain new experience by growing as a professional. On the other hand, I was scared, as it will be a totally new and unknown journey for me which I should face alone. In the end, in July, 2 weeks before my studies begin, the future I saw for me here threw my fears away and here I am – already graduating.

I think each of us should not only take the knowledge from our LL.M program, but also a lesson that sometimes, you should go for the unknown, even in fears, if you want to achieve more than you have. And you know what? At Loyola our professors always reminded us about our right choice, as they served as motivators and ones who believed in us the most. Everyone needs that! And maybe reading this article and thoughts of my classmates will remind you again about your right choice and that you are now at the end of this story of the long journey that is still waiting for you. Keep your head up and believe in you. We do!

Julio: Thank you, Liana, for sharing your experience. I definitely believe that being exposed to the study of different regulations and jurisdictions—with all their complexities—reshapes our mindset. It rounds up our way of thinking, giving us the ability to approach complex scenarios and make smart-risk decisions, all while balancing facts with broader resources. It’s like strengthening a global legal vision—one that allows you to handle situations in a practical way. Looking back, after long hours of study, exchanging ideas, and contrasting strategies, everything began to take a clearer shape. There’s now a deeper understanding of why we pay attention to certain legal aspects in our regions. It’s like we’re now speaking the same legal language.

Before closing this article, we’d like to invite you to check out the reels prepared by students like Liana and the Loyola Students Associations—a brief glimpse into how LL.M. students live these academic experiences.

See you in my next and final collaboration with Jury of Peers. Thank you so much—and see you around.

Bridging Academia and Innovation: Exploring Open Source and AI in a Hyper-Regulated Sector

Suddenly, sunny March has arrived while finals are just around the corner, and our graduation is just a few weeks away as we navigate lectures, papers, and assignments. I can’t believe I am about to complete this phase—one that once seemed so distant. Soon, this will become another achievement that will resonate forever in my mind after a huge investment of time and effort.

Before finishing my program, I wanted to take a lecture focused on technology applied to an overregulated sector, such as the government. The complexity of these entities always adds extra layers of facts and variables, requiring a strategic balance to provide accurate smart-risk advice on complex decision-making processes.

Therefore, the National Security and Data Privacy lecture was a good fit. Since I already have practical experience in both the private and public sectors, this was a great opportunity to revisit familiar topics with fresh eyes, and engage with peers who share similar interests in technology.

Since tech history is being written as we speak, I have been enjoying every minute of the lecture. The professor, a former compliance head from a well-known Big Tech in the U.S., is highly knowledgeable in management and strategy with a notorious specialization in cybersecurity, making each session intellectually stimulating. Likewise, the class is full of tech-oriented professionals and students, many of whom are currently working in the public sector, while others are tech-savvy. Their perspectives and insights consistently enrich our discussions (I am glad to be able to share my local and global perspectives).

Throughout the course, we have explored tech-policy, AI, data privacy, drones, deepfakes, cyberattacks, and the ethics of technology, among others. Something that deeply attracted my attention was the Deep Seek AI solution, which besides distillation and the media hype, it’s important to deep dive and identify the cutting edge enhancements based in Open source and efficiency. As well, the Stargate project, announced in January 2025, is a project that is noteworthy, since their main goal is to strengthen the AI infrastructure.

Reflecting on these ideas, I’ve chosen to write my final evaluation paper on Open Source and Efficient Data Usage. I truly believe that having an efficient usage of data will allow us to design innovations that could help us tackle problems that have been there for a long time—I can’t wait to finish it—hopefully turning it into an academic publication soon. March is such an inspiring time.

Becoming a Part of the Loyola Law School Community

Throughout my professional and academic journey, I have had the privilege of being part of institutions and companies that align with my purpose at different stages of my life.  These places opened their doors, giving me space to grow, sharpen my skills, and push toward my goals.  They reinforce that deep sense of purpose and achievement, which is something that I value.

Before each chapter begins, there’s always a moment of reflection—analyzing options, weighing numbers, to make the best decision, informed and backed with hard data.  Once I take the leap, it feels like sailing through unpredictable waters.  Some days, the current is smooth; other days, it’s like surfing big waves, especially when you have to move to another country.  But no matter the conditions, reaching the other side—gaining experience, learning something new—always makes the journey worth it.

A few months ago, while preparing my Loyola Law School application, I visited the universities where I studied to handle paperwork and obtain certifications.  Walking through classrooms, gardens, cafeterias—even the parking lots—felt like stepping back in time.  Memories hit me all at once: laughter, stories with friends, professors who shaped my path.  Somehow, I tried to recall the stress of finals, but I couldn’t (the pressure is long gone).  What remains are the people and the moments that made it all meaningful.

While organizing my application materials, I wrote my personal statement—explaining why I wanted to study at Loyola.  The process made me pause and deeply think about my journey.  As I looked back at my story, I felt a wave of nostalgia, happiness, and gratitude.  That moment of reflection also brought clarity.  Beyond envisioning goals and career paths, I realized that what truly carries me through is human connection—breakfasts before class, laughs before exams, and connections that last.

When I was searching for law schools in California, I think I was quietly looking for a sense of community—even if I didn’t realize it at the time.  Academic excellence was important, of course, but I was looking for more than just a strong program.  I wanted to find a place where people genuinely care about their students.

During my LLM search, I spoke with several schools, but Loyola stood out.  Professor Ghirardelli, the Faculty Director of the LLM program, surprised me by taking the time to meet with me on a video call.  We talked about my goals, my expectations, and even my concerns.  That kind of openness made all the difference.  Even now, I continue to receive support and guidance that helps me stay on track.

Once at Loyola, I found exactly what I was looking for.  The professors go beyond textbooks, leading by example and bringing the law to life—whether it’s breaking down Civil Procedure, debating Professional Ethics and Moral Character, or making contracts legal framework click.  But what truly makes Loyola special is the community.  The school attracts individuals who share common values, and while there’s a natural drive to succeed, there’s also a strong sense of camaraderie. We support one another, share resources, and work together to push forward.  I don’t just study here; I genuinely feel a sense of belonging, and I’m proud to be a Loyola Law student.

During my time here, I’ve served as Secretary of the Board and former Vice President of the Foreign Trained Attorneys and International Students Association, organizing events and panels that connect us with the Los Angeles legal community.  This experience has introduced me to incredible people and expanded my network.

Outside of campus, I was appointed Vice-Chair of the High Tech and Software Patent Committee at the American Bar Association, where I’ll begin collaborating on exciting projects coming soon.  These opportunities don’t come by chance, they’re the result of showing up, putting yourself out there, and making the most of what’s available.

Loyola Law School has provided everything I need to grow: the resources, the connections, and the engaged community.  It’s all here, and it’s up to me to step in and make it happen.  I am eager for the opportunities ahead to further develop myself, broaden my expertise, and contribute to meaningful projects in the legal and technology field.

An Intention Driven by Purpose

Pursuing new goals begins with introspection—a deep search for meaning. What draws us to certain paths? Where might they lead? Choosing to further one’s education, regardless of its complexity, is always a victory—a reflection of self-care, fueled by love, effort, sacrifice, and the unwavering drive to grow.

In the pursuit of a Master of Laws, the goal was clear: more than just legal education, a community was sought—one that mirrored personal values, and motivated progress. Loyola has provided just that. It is a place where remarkable individuals—passionate, collaborative, and dedicated to growth—come together, committed to the profession and to one another.

The professors stand out not only for their expertise but for their authenticity. Beyond lectures, they invest in student success—not merely through words, but with genuine action. Their commitment to the profession, and their willingness to engage in discussions and offer support, make their guidance invaluable. The staff also plays a vital role, always ready to help students throughout the journey. Their contributions are integral to success, and their impact is deeply appreciated.

In my opinion, what stands out most about Loyola is the exchange of ideas. Classmates, with their diverse visions, careers, and stories, don’t simply complement one another; they expand perspectives.
This shared experience fuels an integral instruction, constantly reinforcing a sense of purpose. The connections made and the sense of belonging are gifts that resonate deeply.

Earning a law degree here requires more than just hard work; it demands dedication, responsibility, and the confidence to seize new opportunities. I am certain that these experiences will ultimately make all the difference. With each passing day, my sense of accomplishment in being part of this institution continues to grow.

My Winter Break

My name is Julio Zerecero. I’m an international attorney specializing in business and technology law, born and raised in the vibrant heart of Mexico City. It’s where I earned my license and developed a passion for travel—a habit I’ve intertwined with my career. Over the years, I’ve wandered the globe, diving into the worlds of business and technology while soaking in the richness of different cultures, landscapes, and, most importantly, connecting with amazing people. It’s a pursuit I plan to carry through my life. Right now, that journey has brought me to Los Angeles, where I’m pursuing my LLM and exploring the city’s vibrant culture.

After a demanding semester adapting to life at Loyola Law School, winter break arrived like a deep breath after a long dive. I took the chance to recharge—exploring the beaches of South Bay, training at a local martial arts dojo near the apartment, and soaking in the calm, friendly vibe of the area. It felt good to slow down and just exist for a while.

I also returned to my hometown, Mexico City. Reconnecting with family and friends was grounding, especially while revisiting my favorite spots—the Independence Angel in the city’s heart, the bustling streets that pulse with life, and, of course, the food. God, the food. There’s nothing quite like it. I even squeezed in a quick trip to Acapulco, a legendary beach destination from the old days. My family and I headed to Punta Diamante, where we devoured fresh seafood, watched stunning sunsets, and relished the warm energy of Mexico. The crowd was international—tourists from the U.S. and Europe—and it felt similar to the diverse energy of the LLM program at Loyola.

Soon enough, it was time to head back. I caught a Friday afternoon flight with a bit of turbulence that added some spice to the journey. Touching down in Los Angeles, I was greeted by local friends who whisked me off for pizza—a nice welcome back. Now, I feel recharged, ready to tackle the new semester, strive for success, savor the experience, and walk across that stage in the spring graduation. Life, as always, is an adventure.

The Adventure Isn’t Slowing Down Anytime Soon

My name is Julio Zerecero, an LL.M. student at Loyola. What I like to think about myself is that I live to learn—about new things, new places, new ideas. Whether traveling or diving into a new challenge, I’m always chasing the next story, the next experience.

I have a deep fascination with history; it’s the backbone of everything around us, the answer to the “whys” in life. Art keeps me grounded, especially surrealism and syncretism—where the unconscious mind and the integration of eclectic symbols create a deeply materialized concept of the perception of reality. I also love music—Zoe, Interpol, Camilo Séptimo, Depeche Mode, and experimental music, as they are part of my everyday meditation.

Before coming to Loyola, and throughout my more than a decade in the technology and law field, I worked at a well-known tech company, designing legal strategies to help governments in the region adopt cutting-edge technologies—from AI to any cloud-based solutions. It was an incredibly dynamic and thought-provoking role.

Along the way, I took some detours. One led me to Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest peak in the Americas and one of the Seven Summits, alongside Everest. I set out to reach the summit, but the mountain had other plans. Still, the lessons from that climb were invaluable, and I’ll be back someday. Another stop was Barcelona, where, after wrapping up business, I visited the temple La Sagrada Familia. Antonio Gaudí’s masterpiece wasn’t just about architecture; it was genius. He left behind blueprints for a structure so ambitious that it’s still under construction nearly a century after his death. If all goes well, it will be finished by 2026. Walking through that space, your senses go into overdrive. It’s more than a temple—it’s an experience, definitely a place to be.

Back in Mexico City, I was training for a national Jiu-Jitsu championship. Under the guidance of Okami with Sensei Arturo, Jorge and my peers, I fought my way to second place. Not bad, but there’s always room for more. At the same time, I was wrapping up my plan to move to L.A. and finally pursue my LL.M.—a goal I had put off for too long due to work, life, and the usual responsibilities. Last summer, I finally made it happen, and I am seriously committed to sitting for the bar next July.

Loyola has been a ride—pushing past my comfort zone, burning through books, building a new routine, and embracing every second of the experience. Los Angeles is a huge, beautiful city, with some similarities to mine, but at the same time, full of new experiences and information to absorb. It’s not just about law; it’s about the people, the stories, the grind.

As for the future? I plan to stay in the legal profession for a long time. Like many other human-centric fields, this profession opens opportunities to help society, advocate for those who need it, and guide (legally speaking) individuals trying to innovate and make a better world. The passion to dig deep into the root causes of solutions that will make us better as a society—or solve problems that shouldn’t exist—drives me.

In the long run, I see myself lecturing in person or through digital tools. It’s something I’ve always been passionate about. My mother, “Maestra Paty,” was a professor in Mexico City, and somehow, that stuck with me. Over the years, I’ve realized that teaching isn’t just about sharing knowledge—it’s about constantly learning from those around you and keeping in mind that we always have something new to learn.

Wherever I go next, one thing is certain: the adventure isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
