How I spent my summer.

Advocate for cybersecurity, privacy, and justice in a digital world

This past summer, I had a unique chance to combine personal and professional development. While earning my LL.M in Cybersecurity, Data Protection, and Privacy, I interned at the Centre for Law and Democracy, where I conducted legal research on privacy rights and freedom of expression. The experience gave me a deep understanding of the interplay between law and technology, particularly international data protection rules.

Beyond employment, I spent time exploring Los Angeles’ diverse cultural and social landscapes, a sharp contrast to my birthplace, Kenya. I visited prominent spots like the Getty Museum, Hollywood Walk of Fame just to mention a few to immerse myself in the city’s rich art, history, and spirit. I also went to bar mixers, particularly those hosted by the Bar Association within Los Angeles, which gave great networking opportunities and insights into the legal profession in the United States.
As I balanced my obligations in Los Angeles I also had time to concentrate on personal matters back home in Kenya. One of the highlights of the summer and a reminder of the importance of maintaining solid personal ties was my trip to see my family in order to stay connected to my roots.
As an avid soccer fan, the summer provided an opportunity to indulge in my enthusiasm for the sport. I eagerly followed the season, bemoaned Manchester United’s shifting fortunes, and even attended a preseason game at the historic SoFi Stadium against our archrivals Arsenal. Watching the game live was an unbelievable experience that blended my passion for soccer with the excitement of being a part of such an exciting atmosphere.
On a more personal level, I focused on my spiritual development, setting aside time for introspection and reconnecting with my faith. Balancing this with my other hobbies provided me with a feeling of purpose and refreshment for the remainder of the summer.
Finally, I made sure to unwind and recharge by watching some of my favorite movies, which were the ideal way to decompress after a long day.
With its combination of legal work, cultural exploration, personal goals and leisure, summer was a true balancing act. Summer experience shaped the rest of the academic year as I learned new things about the legal field and the importance of putting my own physical and mental health first.
